Vital-IT Infrastructure

In collaboration with Intel Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Corp. we have installed several "compute clusters":

  • A development clusters, containing Intel Itanium 2 processor machines and Intel dual-core Xeon 64-bit processors.
  • A production cluster, containing
    • 64 Itanium 2 processors,
    • 64 single-core Intel Xeon 64-bit processors,
    • 256 Xeon 64-bit cores (128 sockets) hosted in 64 blade servers with 8 or 16 GByte memory each,
    • 256 Xeon 64-bit cores (64 sockets) hosted in 32 blade servers with 16 GByte memory each.

In total, the cluster supports ∼400 TBytes of disk storage, and provides more than 2 Tflops peak computing performance.
The operating system of the Itanium compute clusters is Red Hat Advanced Server 4.6 for IA64 and that of the Xeon clusters is Advanced Server 4.6 for x86_64.
In addition, the facility has several large database servers (MySQL and Oracle) and several large shared-memory machines (4 processor, 64GB RAM / 16 cores, 256GB RAM).

Access to the development farm is freely available to all developers of our partner institutions. Access to the production farm is limited to approved projects.
